Peculiar time for drug testing; Alan Eagleson

Nadal and other players subjected to anti-doping tests during Davis Cup

This past weekend saw the Davis Cup finals taking place in Seville, Spain. Spain was triumphant over Argentina, but the most interesting news from the weekend took place Saturday during the doubles competition. While Rafael Nadal and fellow Spanish player David Ferrer where cheering on their teammates, they were asked  to submit to drug testing during the competition. It's hard to imagine this happening in other sports during the middle of a competition. Spanish player Fernando Verdasco had this to say about the timing of the testing:

I don't think it's nice that during a game they take colleagues out to go to a test. They could wait until the end of the match, and they could have allowed them to cheer us and then do the test afterwards.

Looking back at Alan Eagleson

If you are new to the Sports Law field the name Alan Eagleson may not ring a bell with you. Imagine if you will an attorney who was the first executive director of the NHLPA, the top hockey agent of his time and a hockey promoter - now understand that he wore all of those hats at the same time. If you think that sounds like a recipe for disaster, you are right. Read the following link (though it is from several year back, it is a worthwhile read)  and you will begin to understand the power that Eagleson wielded in his day. Can you think of any people today in the Sports Law field with similar conflicts of interest? Let us know what you think at respond@sportslawtalk.com.
