NBA labor talks over for now

Three days of meetings with mediator George Cohen failed to get NBA owners and players on track to an agreement. So for now the meeting are finished until further notice. Cohen had the following to say about further sessions:

In these circumstances, after carefully reviewing all of the events that have transpired, it is the considered judgment of myself … that no useful purpose would be served by requesting the parties to continue the mediation process at this time.

The division of league revenue continues to be a sticking point with both sides looking to receive 53% of basketball related income. The owners had proposed a 50-50 split, but the union felt that  50% was giving up too much after the players had received 57% in the last CBA.

Agent for Andy Roddick dies

Ken Meyerson, the agent for Andy Roddick and other high profile tennis players died in his sleep Wednesday night. Meyerson was President of the tennis division of Lagardere Unlimited.

Going nowhere fast

SLT missed this one a few days back. However, news from the NCAA that they are considering asking agents to register with NCAA is just another example of how there is no synergy between the NFLPA, state agencies requiring regulation of agents and the NCAA. The NCAA could easily  get all this information from the NFLPA's list of contract advisors. The NCAA once had in place a voluntary system for agents to register, however this proved to be ineffective in the 1980's.
