UNC willing to forfeit 2008 and 2009 football wins; OU's Stoops gets contract extension
September 20, 2011
UNC proposes sanctions for NCAA approval
The University of North Carolina announced it will forfeit football victories from the 2008 and 2009 seasons, reduce scholarships by three for the next three years and self-impose two years of probation. The school announced these penalties in the hope the NCAA will accept these sanctions, and let the school remain bowl eligible for this season and next. UNC is scheduled to appear before the NCAA on October 28. The NCAA can accept the self-imposed sanctions or add to them. Forfeiting victories has become a popular throw away item for schools recently, since the games have already been played and the revenue from tickets and television has already been collected. The issue here is if the NCAA will view the UNC violations in a similar fashion to the University of Southern California which was recently hit with a two year bowl ban. The sanctions offered by UNC would allow the program to continue on without too much of a hit, but a bowl ban would certainly hit the school hard, especially with the current 3-0 record in Chapel Hill.
OU gives Stoops an extension through 2018
Oklahoma football coach Bob Stoops received a contract extension through 2018, that will allow him to earn $5.15 million in the final three years of his contract. Stoops last signed an extension back in 2009 that kept him under contract through 2015.
