Practice squads
In the middle of a holiday weekend, NFL front offices were extremely busy. Not only were 53 man rosters being established, but Sunday was the day NFL clubs began putting together their eight player practice squads. The 2011 NFL season will see practice squad players earning $5,700.00 a week or more, if an agent can convince the club of the player's added value. Over the course of the 17 week NFL season a practice squad player can earn $96,900. Practice squad players can be signed to any other team's 53 man roster, as long as the team signing the player does not play the team the practice squad player is leaving that week.
Just last week SLT spoke to an NFL certified agent who claims practice squad players have one of the best jobs in the world - they make a nice wage, they can tell people they are in the NFL, with a much reduced risk of injury, and finally they don't have to pay agent fees. Under NFLPA guidelines agents can't collect a fee from a practice squad player.
