LSU's self-imposed sanctions garner NCAA approval
LSU will be put on probation for one year for major violations committed by its football program. LSU's cooperation in the matter went a long way in minimizing the penalties which could have been more severe. The individuals involved in the case are a former assistant football coach who left the program in December of 2009 and a former junior college football player who never played for LSU. The NCAA lauded the LSU program for doing an "excellent job" of reporting the violations. LSU will be lose two scholarships for the coming season because of the violations - this penalty was self-imposed by the school.

Mendenhall sues over lost endorsement deal
Following the public celebrations over the killing of Osama bin Laden, Pittsburgh Steelers running back Rashard Mendenhall tweeted about the celebrations and questioned what really happened on September 11, 2001. Mendenhall's controversial tweets were widely criticized throughout the United States. Because of Mendenhall's tweets, Champion, a sports wear maker immediately ended its endorsement deal with Mendenhall. Now Mendenhall has filed a breach of contract suit against Hanesbrands, Inc., the parent company of Champion. Mendenhall is looking for approximately $1 million dollars in damages from Hanesbrands.
