Chizik deal; Settlement at hand? WNBA time capsule

June 15, 2011

New deal for Chizik at Auburn

Gene Chizik, head football coach at Auburn University must be feeling pretty good these days. Not only does he have a National Championship under his belt, but he now has a contract that gives him some major protection. Chizik's previous contract signed in 2009 allowed Auburn to suspend his pay if the program was under investigation for "alleged major rules violations or significant repetitive violations".

With Chizik's new contract he will be paid even if there is an NCAA investigation into major rules violations. Once again, winning, particularly National Championships, has many advantages.

Rumors of NFL-NFLPA settlement continue

More and more news sources continue to predict the NFL and NFLPA reaching a settlement in the not too distant future. Is the framework for a new CBA taking shape?

A look back in time (1999)

The WNBA is not a regular feature at SLT. However, as the NFL lockout continues (though settlement rumors are rampant) and a NBA lockout appears on the horizon, today seems like a good day to look back to 1999.

1999 saw the WNBA and the newly formed players' union avoid a lockout when they came to terms on their first CBA. Highlights of the agreement were an increase in minimum salaries from $15,000. to  $30,000. for veterans, and a new minimum of $25,000. for rookies. Year- round health insurance and maternity benefits were additional gains for the players in the new CBA.
