MLB draft underway

Though hardly having the build-up and publicity of the NFL or NBA draft, the Major League Baseball draft is slowly starting to receive more coverage. The draft opened last night with coverage on the MLB network.

Baseball's first amateur draft was in 1965, many years after the NFL and NBA had commenced their annual player drafts. The draft known as the Rule 4 Draft, was brought about to save franchises money on signing bonuses paid to players. The draft eliminated bidding wars to sign amateur players and for the first fifteen years of the draft signing bonuses declined significantly. Additionally, teams like the New York Yankees and St.Louis Cardinals were no longer able to out spend other teams in signing first year players.
