Billy Gillispie named head basketball coach by Texas Tech; Goodell emails NFL players

Texas Tech hires Billy Gillispie
Texas Tech named Billy Gillispie as its new head basketball coach. Gillispie and Texas Tech agreed to a five year contract. This in itself is not earth shattering sports law news, but Gillespie should not be a name that is unfamiliar to sports law students over the past few years. As you may recall Billy Gillespie was fired from his postion at Kentucky, then sued the school in 2009 for breach of contract and fraud. The University of Kentucky then counter sued. What made this even more interesting was that Gillespie had never signed a contract with Kentucky- there was only a memorandum of understanding. Eventually the matter was settled for $3 million.

War of words heating up in NFL-NFLPA battle

Commissioner Roger Goodell's letter to NFL players asking them to urge their union to return the bargaining table has resulted in upsetting many players, some of whom referred to the email as a divide and conquer ploy.  NFL player representatives called the content of Goodell's email less than the truth and decried his characterization of a union still representing the players.
