Background to current NFL-NFLPA struggle; LSU football scrutiny
March 15, 2011
Looking back on the history of the current NFL-NFLPA struggle
April 6, 2011 has been set for the first hearing date in the legal battle between the NFL and NFLPA. The NFLPA is seeking an injunction to block the owners' lockout. But let's look back over the past few years to see what DeMaurice Smith and Jeff Pash were saying back in 2009 and 2010.
Going all the way back to June 15, 2009 DeMaurice Smith correctly predicted that the NFL was planning on locking out the players. On July 23, 2010 NFL lead negotiator Jeff Pash spoke of his optimism about reaching a new deal.
Reacting to the lockout, Congressman John Conyers, Jr., has introduced legislation to revoke the NFL's antitrust exemption relative to television broadcast deals. The Congressman frames it as a jobs issue.
Even more interesting is what one of the so-called experts had to say, Roger Abrams, a law professor at Northeastern University, spoke of his optimism that a deal could be reached in the next week; this was approximately three weeks ago. Professor Abrams had this to say about a new deal being reached: I've always been very optimistic about the prospects for reaching a deal. Now, I think it's possible they may reach a deal within the next week or so..
LSU recruiting scrutiny

Was LSU football paying for a recruiting service, or was the money going to a "street agent" to direct players to Baton Rouge?
The recruiter accused of violating amateurism rules, Will Lyles, is the subject of an NCAA investigation. However, according to the senior associate athletic director for their program, Herb Vincent, “Our coaches and staff members only know him to be part of one of a dozen or so recruiting services we have contracted with”.
