NCAA hits Arizona State baseball hard; Corporate sponsorship at the University level

December 16, 2010

Sun Devil baseball team won't be in Omaha in 2011

The college baseball world series in Omaha, Nebraska is every Division I college baseball team's goal. The Arizona State Sun Devils no longer have that as a goal in 2011 after the NCAA came down hard on the ASU baseball program.  The NCAA cited former coach, Pat Murphy, for failing to promote an atmosphere of compliance, committing numerous recruiting violations and other violations. The Sun Devils will be banned from post season play in 2011, as well as having 44 wins from the 2007 season vacated.

Corporate sponsorship at the university level

Corporate sponsorship at the university level in athletics has risen dramatically over the last twenty years. Revenue from corporate sponsorship provides much needed income to help run an athletic department and support schools' athletic teams.

Here are a few examples of what schools are looking for in corporate sponsorship and what their programs have to offer sponsors.

First, Providence College which has a program of 20 sponsors with commitments ranging from $3,000. to $50,000.

Next, Northwestern University  and the mission of Wildcat sports marketing.

And the University of California with their marketing program through ISP Sports.

For aspiring Sports Lawyers this provides another avenue of entry into the field, whether on the university side or from the corporate side of the negotiating table. If you are not sold on being an agent, or if your leery of those tricky compliance issues, take a look at this side of the Sports Law field.
