IU Athletic Director Fred Glass has decisions to make about head coach Bill Lynch

November 2, 2010

Making the decision

When to fire your head football coach is a decision a college athletic director must carefully consider. Today, attention turns to Indiana University athletic director - attorney Fred Glass. Indiana University's football team had big expectations for the current season, though the team won all four non-conference games against less than stellar competition, the Hoosiers have lost all four Big Ten conference games. Head coach Bill Lynch will probably make it through the season, as Fred Glass called speculation of Lynch's ouster premature.

Remember how quick the University of Minnesota was to pull the plug on coach Tim Brewster? The Minnesota AD, Joel Maturi, felt the need to fire Brewster in mid-season to stop the booing directed at the coach and players at home games. It seems, though, that the mid-season firing of Brewster has only made the season worse for Minnesota players and fans. So, AD Fred Glass has probably learned from Minnesota and at least will let Lynch finish the season.

Take a look at Lynch's contract. Pay particular attention to his termination without cause provisions.
