Antti Niemi, the Blackhawk's outstanding goaltender, will not be re-signed. The restricted free agent was awarded a $2.75 million contract in arbitration. The team decided to replace him at approximately half the price with free-agent Marty Turco.
Niemi's agent, Bill Zito, had this comment, “We knew something like this might happen, butfor a team to walk on a 26-year-old goaltender who just came into his own and won a Stanley Cup, that was a surprise.”
Productive young players, including forwards Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane and defenseman Duncan Keith, will return.
