Sports Lawyers Association Conference wrap-up; Odesnik banned from tennis until December 28, 2011; BCS to U.S. Senators: butt out

SLA Conference highlights
The 36th Annual Sports Lawyers Association Conference in Phoenix wrapped up on Saturday. We cannot do justice here to the entire event, but some of the highlights included Professors Gary Roberts and Gabe Feldman discussing the long awaited American Needle ruling. The two professors did not come to a consensus in their prediction of the court's ruling. What made the most sense from the discussion is that NFL Properties (the marketing arm of the NFL) is a single entity, but the NFL itself is not.
Saturday's gathering of the Executive Directors of the four major professional leagues players associations stood out. Present were DeMaurice Smith of the NFLPA, Michael Weiner of the MLBPA, Billy Hunter of the NBAPA, and Michael Ouellet, the NHLPA Chief of Business Affairs. Remember, the NHLPA has not yet named a replacement for Paul Kelly.
Billy Hunter stated that he "foresees a lockout" coming from the owners, and that the only thing it comes down is that "it's only about the money", and that the owners will go "to the wall". If you're an NBA fan there wasn't much to be encouraged about.
The NFLPA's DeMaurice Smith played it a little closer to the vest and spoke of ideals in advising players. Smith shied away from discussing the upcoming CBA for the most part.
MLBPA Michael Weiner was an impressive speaker stating that his job as executive director was to generate a consensus among the players that gets an agreement to serve the players. It was noted, too, that Mr. Weiner teaches Sunday school and has impressed upon his students the 11th commandment, "thou shall not have a salary cap".
The NHLPA's Michael Ouellet reiterated that the NHLPA was more or less gutted after the Paul Kelly dismissal, so stay tuned- there should be an executive director named in the near future.
Wayne Odesnik claims he planned to apply for a therapeutic exemption, but in fact never did.
