Crimson Tide athletes getting textbooks for others gets Alabama strong penalties

Alabama's appeal of NCAA ruling taking away 21 football victories has been denied.

Over 200 athletes in 16 sports were involved in getting textbooks they were not entitled to.  The scheme involved over 20 athletes who knowingly obtained textbooks to which they were not entitled under their scholarships and then gave them to other students.

Duke defeats Alabama in football!!!

As part of the NCAA sanctions Alabama had to forfeit 21 football victories between 2005-7.  Included in the totals was a victory over a 1-10 Duke team that became a loss for 2006 to improve Duke's record to 2-9.

Prosecutors:  Arenas wanted teammate to join in cover-up

The Nation's Capitol played host to one of history's most famous cover-ups (for those of you too young to remember we are refering to the Nixon administration and Watergate).  Gilbert Arenas may now be remembered with such names as Bob Haldeman and John Ehrlichman. Prosecutors claim he tried to influence teammate Javaris Critenton's story to the NBA.

                                                                          Target Field

It has been said many times that timing is everything, particularly in a negotiation. The Joe Mauer deal was no different. The Mauer deal had everything lined up the right way. Joe Mauer was fortunate that his contract had one more year left on it just as the Twins were moving into their new home, Target Field. Target Field brings the Twins a vastly greater revenue stream. Additionally, the Twins needed to do something big for the fan base as the team prepared for the first season at the new stadium. The Twins, remember, had to let ace pitcher Johan Santana go just a few years ago. Now how would it look, if the Twins entered the 2010 season without getting a deal done for Mauer?  Mauer's agent Ron Shapiro found himself with leverage that would be the envy of any agent. Shapiro understood Mauer's desire to remain in Minnesota and the urgency of finishing the deal before Opening Day. The deal is now done, and with help from the timing of the move to the new ball park.
