Spring training contract renewal; NFL clubs' due diligence

March 2, 2010

Ah yes, spring training in Arizona and Florida. Opening Day can't be that far away.  Yes, it is that time of year. The time of year when Major League players with 0-3 years of service get their contracts renewed.

Between March 2 and March 11 clubs may renew the contracts of the younger players who do not have enough service time to go to arbitration. This is the time when the club has the control. If you go way back before the days of Marvin Miller this was the way it was for every player. Of course those day's are long gone.

Here's a link from last season looking at how the New York Yankees dealt with their 0-3 players.

As the article states most players accept their fate and sign. However, many agents
believe the player should refuse to sign, because they believe it builds a stronger case for the player when he becomes arbitration eligible.

Ryan Howard's record renewal in 2007 received plenty of mention in the media in 2007 when he was coming off an MVP season. This link takes us back to 2007.

It's that time a year again in football, when clubs must do their due diligence and decide if they are really getting the value they need to see from some players in order to tender them a contract offer. The San Diego Chargers have to come to the conclusion that both LaDainian Tomlinson and Darren Sproles are not worth the money
.
