NFL history: The State of Arizona put football ahead of conservative ideology; NASCAR: Gibbs' team extends Kyle Busch's contract

January 19, 2010

The NFL influenced the State of Arizona to recognize Martin Luther King Day

Conservative forces were opposed to state recognition of the federal holiday celebrating Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s life, and conservatives held sway in Arizona.  The Grand Canyon State had a ballot initiative in 1990 and the vote went against a Martin Luther King day.

But the NFL accomplished what reason and decency could not.  With pressure from the Players' Association, Super Bowl XXVII wasn't played in Arizona as had been planned, but was moved to the Rose Bowl.  There were enough football fans in Arizona to tip the next vote in favor of adopting the holiday in 1992; and in 1993 the NFL gave 1996's Super Bowl XXX an Arizona venue.

Hicks to sell Rangers soon?

Nolan Ryan, Rangers president, is part of an investment group seeking to buy the MLB team.  Hicks has been negotiating with sports attorney Chuck Greenberg and his group of investors.

Hicks had a 30-day negotiation period, which has now expired, but the group is expressing optimism that a deal is near.
