Mike Leach is fired; Jeff Jagodzinski story another of year's biggest
December 31, 2009
Mike Leach has been fired.
Leach commented, "Texas Tech's decision to deal in lies and fabricate a story which led to my firing includes, but is not limited by, the animosity remaining from last year's contract negotiations. I will not tolerate such retaliatory action. Additionally, we will pursue all available legal remedies."

Sportlawtalk was not in existence last January so we couldn't cover it, but one of the year's big stories occurred in early January 2009. Boston College fired Head Coach Jeff Jagodzinski abruptly after he interviewed for the New York Jets' Head coaching job. Jagodzinski was told not to interview for the job by Boston College AD Gene DeFilippo, but Coach Jags did anyway and he was promptly fired. The swiftness of the decision is recalled by the lightning quick decision made by the Texas Tech AD in firing Mike Leach. Both of these coaches were very successful, yet each school's administration based their firing on criteria other than a winning record. see link below:

Texas Tech stated, "In a defiant act of insubordination, Coach Leach continually refused to cooperate in a meaningful way to help resolve the complaint. He also refused to obey a suspension order and instead sued Texas Tech University,".
As described in yesterday's SLT blog, Leach would have gotten an $800,000.00 contract completion bonus on 12/31 if he was yet Head Coach. The university said that the termination was with cause, and that would mean that Leach is not owed the money. Link:http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/bowls09/news/story?id=4781981
