Agent's gaff gets client fined $25,000.00: who'll cut the check?; Texas Tech head coach Mike Leach suspended

December 29, 2009

Agent Aaron Goodwin recently told reporters he had asked for a trade for his client Nate Robinson.  Unfortunately, players are not allowed to publicly make trade demands. Robinson was fined $25,000. by the NBA based on his representative's public demands. The statements were considered detrimental to the league. Will Goodwin end up paying the league out of his own commissions?

Texas Tech head football coach Mike Leach, who happens to be an attorney, has been suspended by the school while Texas Tech investigates allegations against Leach in regard to his treatment of one of his players. Leach will miss the team's bowl game on January 2.  Link:

The player allegedly mistreated by Leach is the son of Craig James, former NFL running back and currently an ESPN football analyst.  Adam James had an elevated heart rate and concussion; his parents brought the complaint due to Leach's alleged misreatment of him after the diagnosis had been made.

Leach and his attorney have responded and they will seek to overturn the suspension in time for him to coach the Alamo Bowl.

From Leach's perspective, the following was the factual situation around which the allegations arose (as reported by ESPN):
An attorney for Leach said that while James was secluded twice, the circumstances were not as portrayed in that account.
Ted Liggett, Leach's attorney, said James "was placed in an equipment room as it was much cooler and darker" than the practice field "after a doctor had examined him and returned him to the field."
Liggett said that on that day, a trainer was posted outside the room and that James was provided ice. Liggett said that James was secluded for one to two hours. Liggett said that on another occasion, James was placed in a "press room with air-conditioning and a stationary bike he could use."
Liggett also said Leach placed James in those environments because "Mike tries to keep the players that are unable to practice as close as he can."

Sports Law year in review:  the smack-off in Chicago at the annual Sports Lawyers Association Conference

If any of our readers were at the annual Sports Lawyers Association seminar in Chicago in May, they will surely not forget (with apologies to Jim Rome) the smack-off between Chicago White Sox and Chicago Bulls owner Jerry Reinsdorf and MLB executive director Don Fehr. When Reinsdorf spoke at the annual luncheon he took great pleasure in letting his feelings for Fehr become public.  His line that, "we have nothing to FEAR but Fehr itself", highlighted his talk. The next day Don Fehr made a point by point refutation of almost everything Reinsdorf had to say at the luncheon. It's safe to say that when both of these Sports Law luminaries are fully retired they won't be taking vacations together.
