Baseball's winter meetings; Foot-dragging on release of Mark Mangino's buyout amount; K C Royals signing Noel Arguelles; Cyclist Kenny Williams banned for DHEA use; Northwestern University fans can go out for steak again
Baseball's winter meetings begin today in Indianapolis. Are you a young lawyer or law student looking to break into the Sports Law arena? This isn't a bad place to go to market yourself and make the effort to network and get your name out there.

Kansas University's athletic director refused to give out a dollar amount on now deposed football coach Mark Mangino's buyout. However, it is only a matter of time before the numbers become public. In 2004 the Lawrence Journal-World newspaper filed suit asking that athletic director Lew Perkins' salary be made public. The judge ruled in favor of the newspaper, and the University released the information. Now the same athletic director, Lew Perkins, is refusing to disclose the buyout amount, saying that, based on advise of legal counsel, he is remaining silent. Seems that that he got bad legal advice, because the release of information such as this is a matter of law.

The Kansas City Royals are making a splash in the Cuban market, signing Cuban defector Noel Arguelles a 19 year old left handed pitcher. A five year seven million dollar deal is in the works.

Kenny Williams is banned for two years for taking DHEA. The United States Anti-doping Agency imposed the ban that ends 9/21/11. Among the consequences: Williams will have to return all medals and prizes he received after 7/27/09 (the time of his admitted use of the steroid) and he is stripped of his August, 2009 time trial titles.

Bowl selection will not affect Northwestern's vegetarian fans:
Yesterday was the big BCS selection day. A while back we spoke of the corporate sponsorship of the bowls. On our blog of October 30, we remarked that sometimes corporate sponsorship can take a hit, as in Northwestern football fans' boycott of Outback Steakhouses based on being snubbed by the Outback Bowl in Tampa on two different occasions. The Northwestern boycott of the Outback restaurants is over, as Northwestern was selected over a deserving Wisconsin football team to take part in Outback Bowl on January 1, 2010, against the Auburn Tigers.
