Mauer negotiations may test small market theory of baseball; Jeremy Mayfield case developments; Gary Patterson gains leverage in contract extension negotiation?
December 2, 2009

It has been reported that American League MVP Joe Mauer through his representatives has told the Twins that, if no new deal is in place by spring training, he will enter the free agent market after the 2010 season. The Mauer negotiations should test the small market theory of baseball, that is, it is difficult for a small market team to compete against the likes of teams such as the Yankees, Red Sox, and Angels. Now keep in mind Mauer is a Minnesota native and the Twins represent his home town team. Will there be a home team discount? It will be interesting to watch this story unfold over the coming months.http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news;_ylt=AucY6yD8N46.50O7N.r8CPER
