Zack Greinke takes Cy Young- Royals GM Dayton Moore shows his acumen
Zack Greinke of the Kansas City Royals was named the American League Cy Young award winner yesterday. However, the real winner in this may be the Royals management. Dayton Moore had the foresight to sign Greinke to a four year $38 million dollar deal last January. Therefore, they will be able to avoid arbitration with Greinke and keep him off the open market for a few more years, as opposed to being a free agent after the 2010 season. When entering into this contract both management and Greinke took a calculated risk. Management took the risk that Greinke could suffer an injury or not pan out, but the upside for the Royals occurred. Greinke had a breakthrough season- his value would certainly increase- but now the Royals are getting tremendous value from the pitcher and do not have to worry about losing him until after the 2012 season. Greinke, by entering into the deal, gave up arbitration and free-agency but gained four years of security. Security probably being very important to Greinke based upon some of his past issues. However, now it is easy to second guess Greinke after his outstanding season. But that's the risk you sometimes take when you enter into a deal like Greinke did back in January And here are some links with perspectives on the contract from last January:

SLT may feel the same way about soccer that Jim Rome does. But here's a soccer sports law story about the CBA.

Anyone want to take a crack at the contract provisions for this loan?
"Nikita (Filatov) is a top prospect in our organization and we believe it is in the best interest of his development to play more and in all situations in the KHL," said Columbus Bluejackets GM Scott Howson. "We have agreed to his request to be assigned to CSKA and this should afford him the opportunity to continue to work and develop his game in his hometown of Moscow."
