NCAA eligibility, enforcement and compliance
October 23, 2009
It seems like it's almost a daily occurrence that we discuss the NCAA in one way or another. Well, for those of you interested in the Sports Law field that should tell you something. Colleges and Universities always need help in the athletic department with compliance. The NCAA has an enforcement and compliance staff. Eligibility issues frequently arise and there are staffers needed in this area, too. For instance, two of the SEC's highly touted freshmen are still not eligible to play this season. The investigation continues. Commissioner Mike Silve had this to say of the question of the players' eligibility, " Those are amateur issues that arose prior to their coming to our schools,".

Did you know that SEC commissioner Mike Slive is a true Sports Lawyer? Slive's legal career started in New Hampshire where he practiced law and then served as a district judge for five years in Hanover, NH. Slive was an assistant athletic director at Dartmouth, the athletic director at Cornell, and assistant executive director of the Pacific 10. He was a partner in the Chicago law firm of Coffield, Ungaretti and Harris. Slive was also a player-agent representing former Cincinnati Bengals linebacker Reggie Williams. He was a senior partner and founder of Mike Slive-Mike Glazier Sports Group, a law firm representing colleges and universities under NCAA investigation. After all that we are not even half way done with Mr. Slive's career. Next he became commissioner of the Great Midwest Conference in 1991, then on to Conference USA for seven years, then next up was the SEC. He also served as the coordinator for the BCS for the 2006 and 2007 seasons, as well as serving as chairman of the NCAA basketball selection committee. And some people say NCAA and NBA coach Larry Brown likes to change jobs frequently! Imagine having the moving van contracts for Mike Slive and Larry Brown.
