A FIRE BELL IN THE NIGHT? The Looming Battle in the NFL for a CBA

If any of you are history buffs then you should be familiar with the phrase “ a fire bell in the night”. It was used by Thomas Jefferson in 1820 to describe the alarm he felt about the Missouri Compromise and what it would do to the United States down the road. Well, Jefferson called it right, because 41 years later the Union was divided by the Civil War.

When the NFL owners voted unanimously in May of 2008 to opt out of the final years of the current NFL-NFLPA CBA, this was football’s “fire bell in the night”. The current CBA was scheduled to run through 2012, but the owners felt they would be better off getting out of it and having an uncapped year in 2010.

With the uncapped year scheduled for next year, is a lockout or strike possible for 2011? It may be too early to tell, but the battle lines are being drawn. Newcomers to CBA battles DeMaurice Smith and Roger Goodell will be the field generals, for the NFLPA and the NFL, respectively.

Next season, 2010, will be the uncapped year, and this will bring changes as to how the league determines free agency. In 2010 a player will need six years in the league instead of four to become a free agent. There will be restrictions on the top eight NFL teams when it comes to signing free agents, and each team will get an additional transitional tag to use on a player, to go along with their franchise tag.

OUR IDEA

Thirty years ago the NFL draft was a behind closed doors event, now it has almost become a cultural phenomena, this year to be televised in prime time during the week. No one could have ever imagined that the mere selection of players could draw so much interest.

Well, could it be possible for the NFL and NFLPA to sell the rights to the negotiations and let America go behind closed doors in this titanic battle? It's not that far fetched. Remember, the NFL will practically sell the rights to anything to bring in a dollar. Think of all the businessmen, lawyers, professors and law students that would love to watch the televised negotiations. If the NFL and NFLPA are not quite ready to let us sit in on the negotiations, how about having NFL Films document the CBA struggle? Instead of having the late John Facenda describing the “frozen tundra” at Lambeau Field, we may get a new voice of NFL Films describing the icy stares, glares, and threatening words across the negotiating table as management and players prepare for another all out war at the bargaining table.
