When you have that much money in endorsement contracts you can backtrack pretty quickly.  Endorsement contracts mean always having to say you're sorry.  Links on the apology and the motivation:

The Detroit Tigers were in a predicament. Tigers star Magglio Ordonez' contract called for him to receive an $18 million option for next season if he reached 1,080 plate appearances over last season and this season. Would the Tigers hold him out of games in order to save the money and possibly have a grievance filed against them by the MLBPA? Well, the Tigers will go ahead and let Maggs reach the incentive.
