Bud Selig A "Judge"; Contractural Issues Between Northwestern And University Of Illinois With The Cubs In The Mix
Though Commissioner Bud Selig does not have a legal background, he considers himself the Judge in this matter and tries to harken back to the days of Judge Kenesaw Mountain Landis. Selig certainly would like to lose the "Bud Lite" references:
Bart Giamatti's decision remains honored by Selig- Rose knows the rules:
A while ago Sportslawtalk looked at the contracts between universities to play football. Now there is talk of Northwestern University moving their home game in 2010 against the University of Illinois to Wrigley Field in Chicago. So what are some of the contractual issues that must be taken care to make this happen? First the contract between the two schools would have to be amended, and you would have a third party involved- the Chicago Cubs. How does this change the revenue that the two schools would receive, with the Cubs now involved? Does this even make sense for Northwestern to give up a home game? (for all intents and purposes this is more of a home game for Illinois). Can the Cubs offer enough money to the two schools that they would be better off at Wrigley Field as opposed to Evanston? In most contracts between universities the visiting school is allocated a set number of tickets, this would need to be renegotiated for the increased Illinois demand. Though other contractual issues will need to be worked out, the key issue, like anything else when NCAA schools are involved, will be the revenue that can be produced.
