"There's No Such Thing As Sports Law."
June 19, 2009
When one of our writers at Sportslawtalk.com was finishing up law school several years ago (more like several decades ago) he called a prominent attorney who represented a few football players at the time for advice. One of the first questions he asked of the prominent attorney was about the field of sports law. The attorney's answer was, "There really is no such thing as sports law, there is a little bit of contract law and labor, and employment law, and that is it.". Well today there is such a thing as sports law, and it encompasses a vast array of areas- just think about contracts, marketing deals, morals clauses, tax law that pertains to athletes, drug testing and due process, NCAA violations- the list goes on and on. To paraphrase an old line, Yes Virginia, there is a Sports Law.
Further proof that there is a Sports Law:

As The Simpsons character Comic Book Guy would put it, "The worst contracts ever!":
